On April 30th in 1972 I was hired by The Bugle American newspaper to photograph the Byrds at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Accompanied by Columbia Records executive, John Hagar I had a night I would never forget!
Backstage I got to meet the band before the show and Roger McGuinn didn't want any photos taken during the show.
Guitar player Clarence White was sitting on a church table and said to Roger to let the kid (I was 18 years old) take some photographs.
Clarence was so nice to me and we talked a bit.
The photos here show Clarence playing his B Bender guitar that now is played by Marty Stuart. I recognized the guitar years later when I was photographing Marty Stuart and his Fabulous Superlatives at Summerfest.
The stickers of Frankfurt and Nudie on the guitar helped me recognize the legendary guitar with amazing sound. Clarence you see, invented the B Bender and this is the first one of many to come.
My first blog was on this guitar and Clarence. Enjoy a revisit of Blog #1 with some added photos.

It's a very exciting week here in Milwaukee with Summerfest going on at the lakefront. It is the largest music festival in the world!
Last night, I had the great pleasure of meeting and photographing the band Babe Ruth! They are some of the nicest people I have ever met and the world of rock'n'roll is full of a lot of egos and more.
Very nice people who I told I would do this week's blog on them. Unfortunately, I forgot that I was going finish part 2 of a 2 week blog on The Byrds from 1972. So, my Babe Ruth fans, please give me until next week and I will get that blog done then.
The photos last week were of Clarence White and here are the rest of The Byrds! Roger McGuinn, shown here is playing a beautiful Rickenbacher guitar. Skip Battin is playing bass and Gene Parsons is on drums.
Also, check out my friends The Familiar Looking Strangers, performing at the Briggs stage on Tuesday night, July 1, at 8pm at Summerfest. They always do a great show and have a lot of fun with the crowd.
Have a great week and please join me on Facebook at Rich Zimmermann Photography.
Thanks,

I have done a blog before on Clarence White of the Byrds, but it only included one picture, and it was my very first blog. Clarence is one of my favorite musicians. I got to meet him when I took these photographs on April 30, 1972.
The place was Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He was sitting on a church table backstage when I met him that night. He was very nice to a young 18 year old photographer who wanted to be a rock photographer and was tagging along with a Columbia Records rep.
Clarence is playing his B Bender guitar in these pictures. He developed it and it is legendary. The guitar is now being played and used frequently by country star Marty Stuart. I have gotten to know Marty and we have talked about Clarence. Marty has these photos in his collection! It's so good to see this guitar used again and I recognized it when I photographed Marty in 2008 and saw the Frankfurt sticker on it.
One of the photos I have shared before but the rest have never been seen 'til now.
Enjoy these photos of Clarence and next week I will show the rest of what I have from this show.
Have a great week and of course all photos are for sale! Just contact us and we can help you out.
Thanks,
